FAQs

1. Why we might want to convert MP3 to AAC?

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) has become one of the most ubiquitous audio formats now, second only to MP3. As a newer format, AAC offers more efficient coding strategy and has become the primary format of many platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.

Converting MP3 files to AAC can help you reduce file size, and improve compatibility for streaming and modern devices/apps.

2. Does converting MP3 to AAC decrease/increase audio quality?

It may cause a light quality loss. MP3 and AAC are both lossy audio formats. Converting from MP3 to AAC will compress the audio again with a lossy standard. Even if you choose a higher bitrate than the MP3 source file, the audio quality won’t be any better. But don’t worry, it’s usually hard to notice the difference.

3. Can I convert MP3 to AAC using Audacity?

Yes, with an additional library. Audacity does not support AAC by default. You have to install the FFmpeg for Audacity to help it to import and export AAC format without problems.

4. Can I convert MP3 to AAC using VLC?

Yes. In the convert window, click the wrench button to customize the audio codec to MPEG-4 (AAC). But VLC can only output AAC wrapped in m4v or mp4 containers, If you need .aac or .m4a files, VLC won't help directly.

Wrapping Up

With various MP3 to AAC converters provided above, you may choose the one that suits your use case and tech savviness. If you concern efficiency, security and privacy, Cisdem Video Converter is a go-to option. If you don’t want to install extra software, the Music app and online tools are convenient choices. FFmpeg is the safe and free way if you know how to use it.
